In 1975 Owens Corning supplied 58 kms of Flowtite pipe for a water supply scheme in Iran. Owens Corning was awarded this $25 million contract partly because of the freight savings achieved by nesting 10 meter pipe lengths of three diameters, 1600mm, 650mm and 1700mm, into one shipping package. In addition, due to the resistance of Flowtite pipe to sea water and salt spray, the pipe was able to be shipped as deck cargo offering further savings. The project was designed by Tehran-Boston engineers who specified the use of mechanical couplings for joining pipes. At the time, this was the largest GRP pipe order ever and represented a significant breakthrough in the acceptance of GRP pipes.
